Extractor Fan - FAQ
How long do extractor fans last?
We provide a 2-year manufacturer's warranty for our fans.
The life of exhaust fans is usually 5 to 15 years. The service life is affected by correct installation and intensity of use, as well as by the environment in which it operates.
What are the different types of extractor fans?
Axial fan:
Axial fans are the most common type of an extractor fan. They are also known as domestic extractor fans. They are designed for residential use and are usually installed in bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms, and other enclosed spaces. Our domestic extractor fans come in a range of designs, sizes, and configurations. We offer models with features like humidity sensors, timers, and pull-cord controls. These options allow you to customize the ventilation settings based on your preferences and requirements.
Inline Fan:
Inline fans are also known as Duct fans. They are typically installed within ductwork to help move air through a ventilation system. Duct fans are usually used in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems to enhance airflow and distribute conditioned air throughout a building. Our duct fans come in various sizes and with or without timer to accommodate different duct sizes and airflow requirements.
Which extractor fan size is best for my room?
Initially, two questions should be distinguished—do you already have an air duct outlet for the room and want to install an exhaust fan in it? Then, you should be guided by the maximum dimensions of the air duct and, without exceeding them, choose an appropriate-sized fan.
If the exhaust fan has to be installed entirely anew, it is preferable to choose a place where air discharge can be ensured to the outside. The extracted air can be conveyed straight through the outer wall or used to transport it to the outer room through air ducts.
To calculate the required fan power, we need to measure the m3 of the room. Room m3 can be obtained by multiplying the room's length, width and height (e.g. 3*3*3=27m3). The required frequency of air exchange in the bathroom is four times per hour. This means that we multiply the obtained m3 of the room by 4 - the required number of air exchange times 27*4=78m3/h. The room mentioned in the example requires a fan with a capacity of 78 m3/h. Therefore, according to the technical specifications, we are looking for a fan with a capacity of at least 78m3/h.
What are the benefits of a bathroom extractor fan?
Air circulation provided by e.g. an exhaust fan is essential in the bathroom.
The main benefits of an exhaust fan:
- Removes excess moisture, which prevents the formation of mold and mildew.
- Eliminates odors and significantly improves indoor air quality.
- Enhances your comfort by maintaining proper humidity levels, and by enabling fresh air indoors.
How effective is an extractor fan?
An extractor fan is essential for maintaining good indoor air quality and for preventing issues like mold growth and condensation. It expells stale air and promotes ventilation. An extractor fan is highly effective at removing excess moisture, odors, and contaminants from the air. It is a must have in spaces like bathrooms, kitchens, and utility rooms.
Which extractor fan should I buy?
When choosing an exhaust fan, it must meet the room's requirements. For example, when choosing a bathroom fan, you should take into account the m3 of the room, the dimensions of the air ducts and the necessary additional functions.
The exhaust fan should be able to change the humid air in the bathroom four times an hour. By multiplying the square meterage of the space by 4 (m3 x 4), you will get m3/h. Power can be selected by this parameter.
The bathroom fan must be connected to an air duct to discharge the air to the outside. The fan's air outlet must be equal in size or smaller size than the available air duct size.
Where should an extractor fan be fitted in bathroom?
There are three main factors to consider when deciding the exhaust fan position in the bathroom.
It is preferable to install the fan as close as possible to the direct source of moisture, such as a bath or shower.
An exhaust fan requires an air duct outlet to the outside. The exhaust fan can be installed on an external wall, and the outlet can be straight out or on internal walls and ceilings. In this case, it is also necessary to install air ducts that lead the extracted indoor air to the outside.
The location of the exhaust fan must comply with building and electrical safety regulations. Please consult a professional electrician for electrical safety issues.
Bathroom fans are available in three sets -
- Basic, where a switch turns the fan on and off.
- With a timer, the fan is turned on with a switch. After the switch is turned off, the fan turns off for a set period of time.
- With a timer and a humidity sensor that turns on either when a certain humidity level is reached in the room or when a switch is turned on. After the switch is turned off, the fan turns off for the time set by the timer.
Do you need an extractor fan in the bathroom?
Yes, an extractor fan is strongly recommended in all bathrooms. It is essential for your bathroom because it removes any excess moisture and odors. Additionally, an extractor fan eliminates airborne contaminants and prevents mold and mildew. Appropriate ventilation highly improves the air quality and comfort in your bathroom.
Are bathroom extractor fans a standard size?
Yes, our bathroom extractor fans are in standard sizes to accommodate various ventilation needs. We offer extractor fans in sizes 100mm, 125mm, 150mm, and a few options in size 120mm. For reference, these sizes convert approximately to 4 inches, 5 inches, 6 inches, and 4.7 inches. These standard sizes ensure compatibility with common ducting and ventilation systems, making it easier to find a suitable extractor fan for your bathroom.
How long can ducting be for extractor fan?
The length of the air ducts of exhaust fans to the outlet outside will function with air ducts up to 3 m long without significant drops in power indicators. If the length of air ducts needs to be built longer, then additional calculations are required.
As the length increases, it is necessary to increase the size (diameter) of the air ducts and at some point it may be necessary to supplement the system with other elements of the ventilation system. For complicated solutions, we invite you to contact ventilation system designers. On the other hand, in simple situations, a 3 m air duct from the exhaust fan to the outdoor outlet will not significantly reduce the ventilation capacity and will function sufficiently efficiently.
Can I install my own bathroom fan?
It is possible to install exhaust fans yourself. However, when the fan needs to be connected to the electricity network, we strongly recommend using a qualified, professional electrician.
How much does a bathroom extractor fan cost?
The cost of a bathroom extractor fan varies depending on factors like the fan model, size, efficiency, materials used, and finishes applied.
The price range for a basic extractor fan model is around £17 and £22. However, fans with additional features such as timers, humidity sensors or with different material or color covers, the price range is around £23 and £35.
Whether you are looking for a basic model fulfilling essential functions or a more advanced extractor fan, our wide range of selection suits different budgets, requirements, and style preferences.
How will my extractor fan turn on?
Our extractor fans can be operated manually or by automatic control.
Basic model: The fan is opperated either by a wall switch when your turn on the lights or by a pull cord for manual control. In the same way by switching off.
Model with Humidity sensor and Timer: In addition to the switch that allows you to turn it on manually, it is automatically activated when moisture level rises to a certain amount. This option provides you with automated ventilation as needed. The timer ensures turn off after the set (1-30 min) time period.
What are the requirements for an extractor fan?
Extractor fans should be the correct size for your room. Adequate ventilation requires four complete air exchanges an hour. By multiplying the square meterage of your space by 4 (m3 x 4), you will get m3/h. Choose an extractor fan size and power by this parameter.
It should be installed according to the attached instructions, and local regulations. Additionally, it needs to be equipped with appropriate ducting (if necessary) to extract air to the outdoors.
